Sporting Notes.

[By " Geeaist."]

M. Lord has commenced training operations at Woodville and has five horses in his charge. Scenery, who ran into second place at Waipawa, is included among them. Scenery is owned by Mr E._ Scally. That residents of the township believe it is likely to become a training centre is shown by the fact that sixteen new loose boxes have been erected, six by A. G. Riches and ten by M. Whitehead. Lord has secured the latter range. C. O'Neil left Palmerston on Thursday en route for Australia, where he goes for a five months' hunt after spoil with the hurdler Tupara. O'Neil also took his well known chestnut pony that usually accompanies him on his travels.

Nonette, who it was reported was to bo relegated to stud duties after his display at the Eangitikci Spring meeting, is once mere an attendant at the Awapuni tracks. The Officer (Robinson Crusoe —Marie Louise) who was used by the Hon J. D. Ormond as- a stud horse for some time an<3 was in this district for a season i* also, ifc is stated, to be given another chance to distinguish himself on the- turf. After his sale by public auction last week he. was re-sold to a local sport. A. Hall, who is located at Feilding, has purchased Lull, by Handsome Jack. Lull won the Shannon Cup last season and subsequently a hurdle race at Stratford, paying a good price on each occasion. - . .-..'■

The-tracks presented a busy appearance on Saturday morning, the fine weather and the very satisfactory state p£ the going tempting everyone out. X. Quinlivan, sen., was the first out, at an early hour, and sent his charge, a full sister to Ngatarua, a useful five furlongs. Sir Gcraint traversed a couple of circuits on the plough alone. Mr Buick's pair, Hippodora and the Maliaki—Young Uira filly, were associated in a six furlong gallop, the former finishing in front of her stable ,mate. A bay two-year-eld in the same team was sent round a couple of times slow. Nonette and Windy ran five furlongs from a flying start, tbe old horse holding his companion safe all the way. Ngatarua put up the" best gallop of the morning, leavinc .a mile and a quarter behind in good style. He was picked up at the seven furlong post by St. Albert, who had an advantage at the end of a fast six furlongs. Barcaand Hipporangi galloped a mile fast, the former finishing in front. A. Peters' team did useful work, and after breakfast J. Maher sent out Tomairangi and Blue Diamond, who got through their allotted tasks in good style. .A gobdriooking colt by .St. Conan —Spermaceti .was put.over the schooling hurdles by G. Walls, who also jumped Rosegrove. Both showed considerable aptitude for'beginners. W. McConky has his team looking in very forward coudition. Wild Cat has put on a lot of condition since taking up his quarters in the stable, as also the two-year old colt by Captain WebbSanta Katarina. The colt shows a lot of quality, and has also plenty of size to recommend him. It is probable he will be given an early chance to distinguish himself. The defunct Trumpery's halfbrother, The Knave, has furnished into' a fine big horse, much bigger and 6touter built than his well-known relative. He is coming on well under I under McConky's tuition. Hipporangi and Windy are also in good trim for the season's racing. Eosegrove has gone home to bis owner, and is spelling. ; Domain, the hurdler, who has been turned out for some months past, has come on well, and will be, in all probability, put in commission again at an early date.

The brood mares and- young. stock recently purchased by the Hon. W. W. Johnston have, I am, informed, all. arrived safely at home. Huku broke one of his legs while working at Riccarton one morning last week, and had to be destroyed. At Christchurch horse sales, on.Monday, Largesse was purchased by Mr A. Boyle for 45gs ; Tupara, by Mr J. Carlton, at 59gs; Alexis, by Mr J. Y. MeCracken, at 66gs ; Knastikoff, at 45gs. Noctuiforni, who has been purchased by an English buyer, leaves for England on board the Iluapehu, which is to sail from Wellington, next Thursday.
