The Late Mr Howe
' There was a very large attendance at the service held in the Congregational Church yesterday afternoon in connection with the death of the late Mr George Howe. A good number of members of the Orange Lodge were also present as a token of respect to the deceased, who held the degree of P.M. in the Order, 'lhe coffin, which was placed in front of the rostrum, was covered with a banner of .the Lodge. After the Rev S. Baker had conducted a short and appropriate service the impressive ritual prescribed for the occasion was then gone through, by the Orangemen present. Hymns suitable to the occasion-were used and at the conclusion of the service Handel's '" Dead March " was played by . the organist. At the speci-1 and expressed wish of the family very few ilowers were in evidence. -.
A good number of tho friends and relations of the deceased, . including several of his brother deacons at the Congregational Church, lofi.by the 7.10' train this morning for "Wangamii, whither the body had been taken b,y an earlier train. The interruont was to have-taken place this afternoon, boiD^ conducted by the Rev. S. Baker. . After the conclusion of the service at tho church the members of tho Orange Lodge re-assembled at the Lodge room and re opened the Lodge in accordance with the rules. It was then decided, that tho Lodge go into mourning for their late P.M. Bro. G. Howe. Eulogistic refei'OEce was made by several .members to Bro. Howe's valuable assistance to the Lodge in its early days and to the great interest he had-always taken in the advancement of the Order. It was largely duo to the late J3ro. Howe's efforts that the Lodge now possessed the Lodge-room and property. The handsome banner which was placed on the coffin was a gift from the deceased Brother. Arangements were made for the Lodge to be represented at the burial at Wanganui today, several members going through for that purpose. A resolution was recorded on the minutes expressing the -Lodge's deepest regret m the loss of an esteemed brother, and a letter of condolence and sympathy was ordered to be sent to the deceased's relatives.
At the monthly meeting of the Black Preceptoiy of the Orange Order held last night; the Lodge was formally opened, and ' then adjourned out of respect to their.lato companion. It was decided to attend the memorial services at the Congregational Church on Sunday evening next.
