AUCKLAND, August 21. Father Hays this afternoon addressed a great demonstration of the scholars of all public and private schools in Auckland and district. The educational bodies and Eoraan Catholic authorities granted a public holiday, and a procession from Albert Park was witnessed by thousands of people. At the close of a most impressive address, 5000 children representative of every denomination took with the Father a resolution to practice total abstinence to the age of 25, and by a good example of thrift and industry to become useful citizens and practical Christians. Five thousand souvenirs were presented to those present.
OHItISTCHUKCH, August 21. In the sixteenth week of the Lincoln College egg-laying competition the 228 birds of 38 pens of s x birds each laid 894 eggs. The total for sixteen weeks is 6911 eggs. It is understood here that Joseph Petrie will contest the Grey seal in the Opposition interest, opposing the Speaker of the House.
