UNVEBOaRGILL, March 31. A charge against two brothers named Slott, of assaulting Cons. Holmes when arresting J. A. Stott for the thfft of vegetables, was commenced to-day. The prosecution alleged that the constable, who has been for some days in the hospital, was violently resisted and kicked in the abdomen. AUCKLAND, Marcii 31.
At a meeting of the Crown Lands Board to-day four sections in the Whangape district were forfeited through the failure of the "holders to comply with the conditions relating to improvements and residence. The Commissioner stated, in these instances and others he intended bringing before the Board, it was clear lhat the occupants had taken the lands solely for the purposes of traffic in ,the .timber.thereon in&tead of, as provided by the Land Act, for the purposfs of legitimate settlement.
