The Wellington Education Board.

WELLINGTON. March 30.

The Wetlingtou Education Board today decided to appoint a third mspec. tor.

The Chairman said he hoped the time would come when the Board would be able to emp'oy, m addition to the ordinary inspecting staff, a number of specialists as visiting masters, who would travel around the schools to teach such sub. jects as elocution. In a circular to be issued to head teachers in the Wellington district by the inspectors in regard to syllabus and school methods generally, strong representations will be made in regard to reading. The Chairman of the Education Board in his report on the work of last year, draws attention to the small number of youths who become teachers. While the proportion of male to female adults in the seivice was roughly as two to three, that of male to female pupil teachers was as two to 13. Of 37 pupil teachers appointed in 1904, only four were males. Though increases were made recently in salaries, many teachers were still underpaid. A pupil teacher commenced work at £20 a year, a railway cadet at £40, and. a telegraph cadet at £40. At the end of four years the teacher -was receiving £50, the railway cadet £70, and the telegraph cadet £85. It was also pointed out that journeymen teachers'were paid less than was provided under the trade awards for butchers, grocers, carpenters, painters, bricklayers and hairdressers.'
