NAPIER HARBOWR BOARD. Waipawa, This Day. At a meeting of the Vaipawa County Council a resolution was endorsed asking the Government to alter the constitution of the Napier Harbour Board. The proposal is to replace two Government nominees by elective members of country local bodies and the Hastings Borpugh be granted a representative in place of the Napier Chamber of Commerce. EX-STOCK INSPECTOR. Wellington, This day. Judgment was given this morning in the case of Kerr, ex-Stock Inspector v. the Grown Chief Justice to recover four years salary. The Chief Justice held that in law whateyer merits there might be,- Kerr was not entitled to succeed on the, ground that if he had a contract with the Grown it was broken more than 12 monchs before ho gave his nolice. Judgment was given for the Crown with costs.
HAEBOTJR IMPROVEMENTS. Nelson, This Day, At a special meeting of the Harbour Board yesterday it was resolved, by six to four, to reverse the policy of December last to carry out the construction of the new channel in connection with the harbour improvements by day labour, and call tenders for the work. This action was taken because the difficulty of defining the exact responsibility and professional relationship ot the designing and constructing engineer (Mr Leslie Reynolds) to the Board in its administrative capacity. Testimonials and all applications for employment under the day labour project will be returned.
DRAINAGE SCHEME,
Mr Cutler, a Sydney engineer, who was asked to report on a drainage scheme for the city as between the proposals by Mr Mestayer to empty an effluent septic tank into the mouth ot the river Maitai, near the foreshore of the city, and Mr Leslie Reynolds' scheme, to take effect by pipes laid in deep water. He recommenas the deep water effluent. The probable cost will be £51,000, and the annual charge of interest and maintenance, £3000. He also recommends the sealed septic tank with three feet of earth covering a concrete roof.
AN APPEAL DISMISSED. DUNEDIN, This day. At the Police Court John LafTey licensee of the Otago Hotel, was convicted of serving liquor to G Magorian while the latter was drunk and fined £10. Laffey's appeal was to-day dismissed by Judge Williams with thirty guineas costs. SWANSON'S ESTATE. AUCKLAND, To-day. The late Hon. Mr Swanson's estate id -valued at £60,000, and1 is divided among the members of his family. SAD SUICIDE, | CHRISTCHURGH, This Day, Edward Yates Simpson, who held an important position in "Messrs Simpson and Williams'. Ltd booksellers, of this city, was found m a dying position in a paddock between Richmond and Burwood at three o'clock this morning-. He j died before medical assistance reached him. He has been very depressed in spirits recently and left home yesterday afternoon at three o clock. Groans attracted the attention of two men passing- the paddock. Nothing as yet has transpired to show the cause of death, but no external marks of violence were found on the body Simpson was highly respected and the news of Ms tragic death has caused deep regret.
