(Per Press Association— Copyright) Received to-day at 5.35 a.m. DEATH OF A SCIENTIST. SYDNEY, This Day. The German scientist, who died •at Kerg-ulen was Dr. Euzensperjer, and the one who was invalided to Sydney is Dr. Worth. The future movements of the expedition are uncertain, but so , far as Kergulen is concerned the expedition completed its work, which is purely scientific, especially in respect to ■wind, temperature observations and geological research. When the Stassport arrived at the island it was decided to leave the expedition's unused provisions for the benefit of possible, castaways, and a notice to that effect was conspicuously posted. The only iresh food obtainable at the island was rabbits, which swarm there. The rate of increase is only regulated by the scarcity of herbage. POLAR EXPEDITION, The German Government proposes to despatch another South polar expedition in December to pick up the party on the steamer Gauss, which, when they 7eft Germany last year, intended to stay till next year whaling. A vessel will probably be secured and will start from Capetown. If tlja. Gauss is not picked up she will replenish the food depots in the ice regions.-ARLTUNG-A GOLDFIELDS.. Received To-day at 9.39 a.m. ADELAIDE, This Day.. The Government Geologist, in a further report on the Arltunga field says :—" My favourable opinion of the prospects of the districts generally have been confirmed by recent inspections. Some working and prospecting of the old gold localities and outside country is being done. A party discovered gold twelve miles westEllistown are missing. There are one large outcrop of quartz and good prospects of gold- on the reef." CORONATION HONORS. SYDNEY, This Day. Lord Tennyson invests the recipients of Coronat honors at Government House to-night. It will be a brilliant ceremony, and the first of its kind in Sydney. FISHING TRAGEDY. ADELAIDE, This Day. Miss Meyers and Misses Livingatone (two), who went fishing at E-lliston, are missing. There are indications that they were washed off the rocks. THE FALL IN STOCKS. ' PERTH, This Day. Mr Wise has returned from London. Referring to the fall in Australian stocks, he said they shared the same fate as all high securities, including consols. He thought the Daily Mail's criticism had some edect in reducing the value of Australian stocks, but aot so much as was imagined, PREMIER'S CONFERENCE. SYDNEY, This Day. Mr Alfred Deakin has received no despatch from the Pacific Cable Board in reference to the estimated deficiency of £95,000 on the year's working. He applied for. monthly statements of revenue in v order to obtain a definite gauge. NOT COMING^ It is announced that Edward Lloyds' Concert Company have abandoned their visit to New Zealand, owing to the flattering reaction received m Melbourne. The Company have decided to return their after the Sydney season.
