Fire on the Manapouri.

monster engines and lines of hose from the German and other steamers, an immense quantity of water was poured into the iianapouri. The vessel then aradually righted, and as the hold filled, the fire, which was chiefly confined to the starboard "dc of the main hold, was quenched. All danger »as over by two o'clock. She now lies on an almost evea keel. There is twenty feet of water in the main hold and two feet m the nuiii saloon. It is estimated that 230 tons of copra were destroyed, while the planking between the decks and thirty or forty feet of decking from the main hatch, hare been badly damaged. The outbreak was very difficult :o fight, owing to tae great jieat and dense pnngeut smoke from the copra The fire wss first attacked from the eneiseroom, bnt the firemen were driven back and several attempts to get below proved futile.

A fireman slipped oa the deckaad severely injured his back. It is impossible to ascertain the damage done to the yessel until a surrey is made.
