RAILWAY ACCIDENTS.
Another victim has been added to the already formidablo list of fatalities amongst shunters on the New Plymouth section of railways. It appears that the unfortunato man this time was only 18 years of age, and was a porter, and not a regular shunter. The jury expressed the. decided opinion that lad porters should not be employed as shunters, a reflection on either the Department or tho sl-tionmaster. There seems to be something radically wrong in a system which permits mere boys to perform work of a nature which evidently should bo dono by men of more experience in the service. The deaths by accidents on our railways are either amongst the young or old mon, and points to the fact that tho former commences the dangerous portion of his work too early and the latter is permitted to retain his position after his time. At all events, there should bo a searching departmental inquiry into the eircumstancos of the accident at Stratford in order to probe the matter to tho bottom, and thus place tho blame on the right shoulders.
