. "Wellington, July 30. Five days after leaving New York, the barque Herbert Fuller, which arrived last night, ran into a gale during which a seaman named Frank Yates was washed overboard.

John McEwan, aged 71 years, formerly a military settler at Opotiki, died at the Porirua Lunatic A syluru yesterday. He had been under restraint for thirty-one years. It was mentioned at the inquest that among the patients is a woman admitted to the Asylum in 1854.

Auckland, July 31. A meeting of the Chairmen of the City and Suburban School Committees' last night unanimously condemned the present system of election of members to the Education Board, there being -no secrecy about the method. It was decided to request the Minister for Education to have an alteration made in the Act the present session to enable the vote to ba carried out by ballot.

Greyjiouth, July 30. The Harbour Board, being dissatisfied with the progress made in boring for coal at Dobson, resolved to-day to discontinue operations in the meantime, to discharge all hands, and to bring the appliances to town. The bore is about 330 ft down and has cost over £1100.

.Dunedin, July .30. The hearing of the charge of manslaughter against Eobinson, the engineer in charge, arising out of the fatality at the Government lime kilns was concluded to-day. Evidence was given by Messrs. E. Hay and Hursthouse, engineers, that under similar circumstances they would not have timbered the ground. The Magistrate dismissed the charge.

Auckland, July 30. The action of two Justioe3 of the Peace in connection with • a school attendance case heard in the Police Court last week is to form the subject of a case in the Supreme Court. The point is that the Justices convicted the defendant without allowing evidence to be called for the defence. At the Supreme Court in Chambers this morning, before Judge Conolly, Mr J. B. Eeed made an application for a rule nisi calling on the two Justices who heard the case to appear at the Supreme Court, and show cause why a prohibition of their decision should not issue. His Honor granted a rule nisi returnable on August 7th. The two Justices will have to appeal1 at a sitting of the Supreme Court in Banco on that day to show cause for their decision,

Steatfokd, July 31. The first rails of the WliangamomoaStratford line are being laid to-day. The Dairy Commissioner and staff have arrived to conduct the Dairy School.
