The Tariff Proposals.
(Per Press Association.) Cheistchuech, August 23. The Premier, after making enquiries through the Customs Department. ha 3 come to the conclusion that the statement that tho New Zealand Drug Company would lose? from to £20,000 by the reductions in the Customs tariff is not borne out by facts. It appeared that the total value of patent medicines imported during tho year 1899 for the whole colony was £34.000, while the whole duty on all importations for the year only amounted to i-14,000. This being the case, he could not see how it was possible for an individual firm to lose such a sum as that mentioned, which amounted to more than the total duty collected in the colony. The Premier has given instructions for enquiries to be made as to the quantities of kerosene in the hands of wholesale importers on August 17, with a view to seeing to what extent importers will be affected by the change in the Customs tariff. Dgnkdin, August 23. A largely attended meeting, called by the Mayor at the request of the ironworkers, was held this evening, the Mayor presiding. The following resolution was passed: —We, the workmen of the various iron trades, strongly protest against the remission of the duty on mining machinery, as we think that it will be detrimental to the best interests of the iron trade, and we urge all representatives of Otago^ to oppose this measure. The dredging industsy has been brought almost to perfection by the perseverance and capital of the of the people of this colony, and now this perfection has been attained, we are to be robbed of our rights by tho introduction of foreign capital. It was also resolved that the Mayor forward the resolution to the Premier and the senior member for the city. Wellington, August 23. The candleniakers' conference decided to ask the Government to take off Id from paraffin wax if they cannot restore the duty on candles. The Kaiwarra works received notice to-nsgbt, Auckland, August 23. The Industrial Association resolved to urge the Government to reinstate the duty on candles, or than the present duty on paraffins be removed so that the local industry may be encouraged.
