At the Police Court August Deßeer, a travoller, was fined £5 and costs 2Ss, for altering a railway excess luggage ticket, with intent to defraud the Railway Department. The amount involved three shillings. IvVERCARGILL, AugUSt 23, Francis King, a farmer aged 47, was to-day committed for trial on a series of extraordinary charges of extorting money from E. A. Elliott, of Fortrose, a storekeepor, while threatening him with a loaded revolver. Auckland, August 23. The City Council to-night declined to grant an extension of time for the construction of electric tramways, which by tho agreement with Mrßingham have to be completed in two years from June last. The Council resolved to offer the Harbour Board a rental of £500 per annum for tho Freeman's Bay reclamation for a new j recreation park, provided that tho ratepayers vote in favour of a loan of £8000 to. lay out the ground, It has been discovered that a letter box in the general post-office used by Messrs Mackay, Logan and Co, has been opened bj' someone possessing a key which fitted the lock and letters containing cheques to the value of nearly , £100 abstracted.
