The demand for gold for South Africa has been renewed* The Ninevah took two hundred thousand sovereigns. THE COMMONWEALTH BILL. Adelaide, May 18. The Hon C. C. Kingston has sent a cable message to the Premier stating that he is hopeful of the Commonwealth Bill being returned to the colonies in a satisfactory form. London, May 18. Lord Sherborne, speaking at Rochester, said the difference in connection with the Commonwealth Bill was the difference between two equally conscientious sets of statesmen seeking to find what was best for the Empire. Experience alone would decide which side was the wiser. It would be better to let things grow than insist at the outset on the fullest conceivable development. TRUST INVESTMENTS. Sydney, May 18. The Premier has received a cable message from England stating that it is intended to introduce a Bill into the British Parliament giving trustees authority to invest trust funds in the inscribed stock of any responsible colonial ! Government. AN UNGRATEFUL PRINCE. London, May 18. The Duke of Orleans, while professing profound respect and gratitude to the i Queen and Royal family, has informed I the London Bachelors' Club (from which he was recently expelled for his relations with the author of certain objectionable caricatures of her Majesty) that France refuses to barter French sentiments for hospitality. He refuses to resign his membership. A DISGRACED SOLICITOR, Sydney, May 18. _ The Full Court after a lengthy consideration has refused an application by Mr D. Meagher for reinstatement on the roll of solicitors. He was struck off the roll in connection with his unpro- i fessional conduct in the notorious Dean j poisoning case. !
The Chief Justice (Sir Frederic Darley) in delivering the unanimous judgment of the Court, said that seeing how recently the public mind had been disturbed over the matter, and how vivid the recollection must be of what had occurred, the application could only be regarded as premature and on that ground alone would have to be refused. In a very few years, however, succesful application might be made. •
THE PACIFIC CABLE,
London, May 18. The Hon. W. P. Crick (PostmasterGeneral) has received a cable message from the Hon J. Chamberlain containing particulptfs of the Pacific Cable Board's estimator putting down a single line. Th?# st is put down at £1,800,000, and thtrCaaterial could be manufactured and laid In eighteen months.
With a rate of two shillings per word, it is estimated that the Pacific portion of the line would result in a loss of £5400 a year, but with the stimulus that would be given to business by the reduced rate and the development of the local Pacific trade, it is thought the deficit would disappear in a few years. The Australian Governments are asked to give an early decision as to whether they are willing the scheme should be proceeded with.
RUSSIAN AGGRESSION,
London, May 18. The Pekin correspondent of the Tunes states that Korea has granted Russia a site in Mesampo harbour ior a coal depot and naval hospital.
It is also stated that Korea has undertaken not to alienate certain stragetic points elsewhere.
M. Pavaloff, the Russian Minister in the East, has intimated that Mesampho will be made the winter quarters of the fleet.
The Times commenting on this intelligence, says " the concession is a grave menance to Japan."
