Meisrs Steveni and Gorton's next Btock sale at the Awahuri SaU Yards will be held on Tuesday, IBth inst, at 1 o'clock. The programme of the Caledonian Society meeting for Queen's Birthday appears elsewhere. : ; THe Caledonian Society Committee decided to .treat -each local newspaper exactly alike in tho matter of advertising. In thus acting public opinion will commend the course adopted. We understand that there will be an exhibition .of fire- works in front of. the Theatre on, the occasion of the lecture' by Mr Stevens,on Friday night.at which there will be probably a large attendance from all the surrounding districts. There seems to be a doubt existing as to whether the Executive Committee of the Education Board had the power to appoint a subcommittee to investigate the circumstances connected with the protest against the election of the School Committee. The general opinion geems to be, that the question should have been submitted to a full meeting to the Board. Au altered advertisement from the Ready Money Store appears elsewhere, to which special attention ii directed. We are sorry to hear that the abnormally heavy expenses in connection with* the recent entertainment, have left only a very small surplus to be handed, over. Expenses appear to have' been incurred on a quite too extravagant sculo. An exceeding interesting and graphic description of the memorable fight at Te Ngutu ote Manu, (beak of the bird), will appear in our columns to-morrow. : It is taken from the Lytteltpn Times,a.ud the writer, whose descriptive powers are. exceptionally good, tells his ntory in a manner that sustains its thrilling interest from beginning to finish. Tho writer of -this paragraph was at Waihi redoubt within a few days of the tragic occurrence, and heard from the lips of his, brother, now deceased, then in Major Von Tetnpley's coips, full details of the disaster which occurred to our forces, and which, even in minute : details corresponds with the narrative in the Lyttelton Times. Mr Isherwood, of the Club, Hotel, was, we believe, present at the engagement in command of a company. It will be many a year be* fore the Te Ngutu o te Matiu engagement is forgotten, or the memory of those brave men who gallantly met their doom on that occasion seases to be "Jheld. in mourrifliresteem and admiration*.: The Borough Council special meeting convened for last. ni?ht to consider the Balance Sheet, had to be adjourned for want of ,a v quprum. It was arranged that the adjourned meetiner called for this evening in connection with the burgess roll be also adjourned. The date fixed v 'fpr- the holding of both meetings is Monday next. On Friday Mr Jas. H. Stevens of Feilding will deliver, an illustrated lecture, entitled " Stray Leayes from my scrap book on the Soudan," as given to crowded houses in . Feilding . and elsewhere. The lecture will be illustrated with a - number of life-like photo-trans-parencies and should prove exceedingly interesting. It will be given in the Theatre Royal commencing at 8 p.m. Mr C. H. Hinttian will give an address in the Gospel Hall Main-street, this eveninjj, to which all are earnestly invited. The subject will be what is •' The Church of God ;" and who are " The Members ?" . Service will commen at 7.15 p.m. Persons going are requested te bring their Bibles with them. There will be no collection. At the urgent reqnest of several residents of the Square and others, who were indignant at a personal attack made jn print on the station, master, for enforcing the rule with regard, to hotelporters, carters, &c, we have consented to publish in our columns & letter addressed by Mr Linton to the Times 'giving a most satisfactory reason for the stationin aster acting as he did. It is not customary to reproduce letters to the editor which have appeared in other papers, but this appears to be an ex- | ceptional case, and we have therefore consented to depart from the usual rule. The letter will appear to-morrow. We are glad to see Dr Chalmers about * again to-day after bis recent sovere accident. ''"..,.. The School Committee appear to have been altogether ignored by the appellant in the matter of the protest against the election, as they have had no notice of the deputation from the Board tomorrow afternoon to investigate the matter. However, they will be there, in the case of eventualities.
