THE FIRE BRIGADE.
The usual monthly meeting of the Palmerston Eire Biigade was held last evening m the Commercial Hotel. There were about 15 members present, all of whom appeared to take much interest m the proceedings. Captain Bentley occupied the Chair. The only correspondence read was a letter from Mr Lambert, resigning his position of Lieutenant of the Brigade. The managing Committee reported that after enquiry as to the cost of the imported, article, they had given an order to a local tinsmith for 2 dozen buckets, at 40s per dozen, which had been executed satisfactorily. 'I he Decessary ropes for buekel lines had also been procured. The Committee had taken over hook and ladder carriage from Mr Stratford. They had consequently to erect a shed to put the carnage, &t\, into for safe keeping. The following new members were elected: — Messrs G. Key, Jas. Small, W. E. Haines, R. Hi-ndewon, T. H. Nicholsou, W- Rowland, C. Ganstad, and Wm. Leigh. Mr Stratford asked whether any steps had been taken to obtain the fireengine promised by Mr Wai cleg rave, as agent, of the N. Z. Insurance Company. ; 'The Secretary (Mr West) explained that the offer was made contingent on a water supply being obtained. The matter had been brought before the Borough Council, and referred to a Committee, who had not brought up a .satisfactory report. He suggested that ihe Brigade should try and drive a stand-pipe. He (Mr West) had the necessary gear which could be used for the purpose, and the Brigade could drive the pipe on practice nights. Water could be obtained at 14 feet. After some further discussion, the matter was referred to the Managing Committee. Capb. Bentley mentioned that the subscriptions which had been promised the Brigade ought now to be called for, as the Brigade required funds to obtain what was really lequisite, Messrs King and Kerslake were nominated as a sub-committee for the purpose. Capt. Bentley uhen suggested that a torchlight procession be held when the men were able to appear m uniform. The Volunteer Band would no doubt assist, and they would make a creditable appearance, It was resolved that a torchlight procession be held, the date to be fixed by the Managing Committee. After a vote of thanks to the Chairman, the meeting concluded.
