OUR FINANCIAL CONDITION.
According to a "Wellington paper the Colonial Treasurer made a, remarkable statement m the House of Representatives with, regard to tfye present financial condition of the colony. Referring to the alleged existing depression of trade, he admitted that there was real I j a depression of trade among the whole*sale dealers, on account of orer-importa-liens during tfce past year^ to $he extent of about £1 ,090,000 m excess of. require ments, and the consequent difficulty m disposing of stocks paid for or advanced upon. Bat he denied altogether that there was any general financial depress sion. On the contrary, he asserted that the consumers were betyer off than usual on this very account, because they could buy what goods they wanted cheaper than they would otherwise, m consequence of these abundant stocks on hand. As an illustration, also, of the general soundness, financially, he mentioned that, although for many years past during the winter, there had always been a cry of large numbers of people being out of employment., there had been no such complaint anywhere m the colony daring the present winter.
