(UNITED PEESB ASSOCIATION.) Auckland, This Day. Cornwall, of Samoa, whose dealings with Me Arthur & Do., have been sevpral times before the public, and who recently horse- whipped a member of that firm, has drawn up, and transmitted to the Secretary of State for the Co'oni s a petition, entering fully into all the circumstances or the case, and contending thut the seizure of land made by McVrthur was unjust and illegal, and injurious to the interests of a large number of the natives of Samoa. It is reported m town that Cornwall has got up a company m connection with S-"anuoa, and that John Lundon left on Sunday to take possession of the land m dispute. The governor left for Waikato yesterday accompanied by the Hon. Thoroas Russell. He first visits Taupiri and Woodlands, the W- ikato Land Association's station, then Cam* bridge, Hamilton, Te Awamutu, and possibly the Cambridge visit will extend to Friday. The Education Board resolved to pay the expenses of country members m order to secure a better representation of country districts. Wellington, This Day. The Pre.ruiet- has returned to Wellington. It is stated that an official enquiry is about to be held into the circumstances connected with tbe burning of the Waihenera Hotel about two raontbu ago. Fact* which have since transpired are paid to be of a suspicious nature. Christchurch, This Pay. In th" case of Black, late County Treasurer, charged with embezzlement, the jury retired at half-past 6, ami at a quarter to 8 o'clock returned with a verdict of not guilty. The prisoner will be charged on another itdictment with embezzling county funds, but he has to be liberated ■- on bail. Daniels will be tried to -morrow for arson.
