Cook, of Para to Blenheim hospital who had both his hands cat off on the' {railway. It appears that the afternoon train from Picton had jast turned one of the carves on the line between Para arid Tuakarima when the engine-driver perceived a man a man lying full length across the rails. He at once put on the break, but perceiving that the .train could not ba brought to a standstill before the spot where the man lay, was reached, tha | foreman, Wm. Hunter, ; jumped from the engine, and at . great personal risk, succeeded m dragging the man's bodyclear of the railsj, but was unable to pull him sufficiently clear before the engine came up, and completely severed one hand at the wrist, }aad'bat the othe hand right across the palm below the thumb to thethirn finger; 1 Theim--1 fortunate man was placeck-in the train, and conveyed to the hospital here.
