LOCAL AND GENERAL.
We again remind our readera that the outward Englishman -via Frisco will .close at the Palroerston "office this evening, at 7.45 p.m. Mr S. Sanson is inTiting foS bnshfalling m Taonui. Tg^rera willi find all information m the a^wrtisement elsewhere. 'l^gfc The scandal m high life, elswherereJ f erred to, is, we hear from the Cape, only ; too true. We (Wellington paper) are m» formed that the implicated parties, Major Stevenson, who is a widower with children, and Mrs St. John intend returning to the Cape. We learn that the parchment placed m the opening m the foundation stone of the Wesleyan Ohurch, along with the copy of the Mahawatc Stand abd, was engrossed by Mr G. E. Hawkins, who devoted the most of 24 hours to the tasteful execution of the very elaborate specimen of skilled penmanship, for which he declined to accspt any remuneration whatev»r. A notice is inserted elsewhere convent ing a meeting for the revision of the jury list of ihe district of Palmerston North. -
The nuw Wesleyan Church will, v^e understand, be opened early m May, the President of the Conf rence (the Rev. R. Bavin) being the officiating minister. Tbe building, we believe, will seat upwards of 400 people. A correspondent deiires to know is " an enormous ring round the moon" an indioa* tion that " cranky" people require looking after with more care than ordinarily. A peculiar looking character has been doing Palmerston lately, on the begging* letter racket. He is a good specimen of the species vagrant, and should be warned to move on les* evil may befal him. Some* times he walks with a limp, and sometimes he does not, but he is uot a bad hand at imposing on good nature. Mr G, W. Shailer's studio is now res moved to the other side of Mainsstreet, just above the Court House, where he has better facilities than m his old premises for the requirements of his business. -. The station windmill has beeu raised some ten or twelve feet, the better to catch a steady breeze. The framework forming the base is a most substantial structure composee of beams of heart of totara mor« ticed together, and bound by strong iron bolts. Special efforts have been made to in* crease the effect of the interior arrangements and decorations of All Saints Ouiimh fftr-TKsujtftr, anvAral ladies anil gen« | tlemen having been busily engaged for some days past m completing various ' elaborate and suitable devices, which i should have a very pleasing appearance when properly arranged. Many of the decorations are really artistic productions, displaying considerable skill, and showing the result of much labour and perseverance. The weaither does not look very aus* picious for the picnic of the railway employee to take place at Westoe, to-mor* row. We trust that for their benefit particularly it will remain favorable, as it is not often they and their wives and families can enjoy themselves together. We again remind our readers that there will be no issue of the Manawatu Standabd to-morrow, being Good Friday, j and a recagnised public holiday. We remind intending tenderers that tenders invited by the Manawatu High- ' way Board close on Saturday, at 11 a.m. A letter is lying at this office addressed to Mr G. P. Oobbe, Professor of Music. The Manawatu Standabd will not be published on next Monday, March 26 being Easter Monday, and a general holi» day. I Mr Walter Simpson informed us last evening that . the - rabbits seen m the directien of £he Race Course had been promptly exterminated. _ Notices have also been served on various property* owners m the Terrace End neighbourhood where the pests have been seen. We hear that m Foxton and Lower Eangitikeithey I are rather numerous. The Wangaqui Chronicle has got hold of some cock aod bull yarn about precious stones being found up Stoney Creek way. Who has been hoaxing it so palpably ? Some journals are easily " had" i Special attention is directed to the adver--1 tisement of Mr S. Fagan's great clearing > Bale to last for 21 days. , Mr Fowler's advertisement appears m an altered form this evening. The Wanganui Chronicle questions the authenticity of the statement that Miss 1 Jenny Nye is to pay Palmerston a visit. Barnurn, the great American showman, has taken home nine . Australian blacks, amongst the number being the champion boomerang-thrower of Queensland, a wrestler, and one of the fastest runners m the district m which he resided.
