'Frisco Mail Summary.
(Per City of Sydney, at Auckland,) (united press association.) Lowdon, Dec 18. Thievfis robbed the Cathedral of St. Jenis, Paris, to the amount of 10,000 francs. The Albert mills at Dewsbury, were burned down on November 25th. The loss amouuted to £30,000. The London and North Western car factory at Wolverhamton was also burued on the same date. The total loss is £10,000. Siberia Koff, the Russian millionare, patron of the Arctic explorer, Novdenskjolk, has failed. His liabilities amount to several millions of roubles. The Russian Minister of the interior has authorised the publication of an English paper m St. Peteraburg. Stamford Court, Worcestershire, the seat of Sir Francis Winnington, has been burned, together with valuable pictures and manuscripts. On the night of the 6th December the Royal Alahambra Theatro, London, was burnt. The audienca had j ust retired . Within half an hour from the commencement of the fire the dome fell. The neighbouring houses were gutted, aud the whole equipment of the theatre was destroyed. It was uninsured. The Emperor and Empress of Russia drove through the streets of St. Petersburg on Sunday November 18th m an open aleigb. The people cheered enthusiastically. Extraordinary precautions for safety were nevertheless taken. On November 28 th the Rhine at Mayencejreached the highest point re corded m the present century, and at Boun the lower storios of the houses were submerged. At Coblentz the water forced its way from all sides into the gardens of the Imperial Palace. The town council of Maye.nce has voted a large su<n m aid of the sufferers m the flooded districts. Cologne and Rouen also suffered, as well as Dusheldorf. The porta at the place first named were empted of stores and amunibion, and the Zoological gardens were inundated. The military tribunal at Odessa has found Colonel Staeraky guilty ef embez* zling 1,125,000 roubles, and sentenced him to banish me at. The Prefect has ordered the police to expel the jews residing within St. Petersburgh without permission.. The Senate has also decided that Jews are incapable of holding office m Russia. Tomavholi, a welNknown banker, was murdered and robbed m a well frequented street m Buckharest. The eldest son of the late King of Bunmh escaped from Benares, and it is believed he is en route to Upper Burmah to raise a rebellion, In decorating the troops m Windsor Park, the Queen, said •' I have called upon you to-day to express my best thanks for the gallantry and devotion you displayed m the short but decisive struggle m Egypt, and to say how proud I am of my soldiers and sailors who have added fresh laurelu to those already obtained m previous campaigns, and their devotion to their Queen and country." Wh^n the Queen had finished conferring the decorations, she presented a medal to Baron Hogendpn ot the German ministry, and an attache of the British m Kgypt.
Eight thousand volumes were destroyed by fire oa December 21st m the Spanish War office at Madrid. Some of the volumes destroyed •were the original M.B.S. and despatches including several from the Duke of Wellington when commander of the allied armies m Spain. Sant Francisco, Dec. 18. The engineers of the proposed Panama canal have been compelled owing j to natural difficulties, to change their plan of working. They find it impossible to make the sea level canal from ocean to ocean, and have decided to adopt the ordinary plan of locking up and down grades. The transit of Venus observed on the 6th of December was quite satis* factory. The day was clondless, ani astronomers at this point were able to secure quite a number ot sharp distinct photographs showing the points ot contact, and different positions of the planet on the sun's disc. The officeis of the Bellevue Medical College, Boston, have been arrested for system aticalJy issuing diplomas to persons grossly ignorant of the theory and practice of medicine. The Mormons are much pleased with President Arthur's message, and say God has interposed m their behalf. The heuds of the church have returned to Salt Lake on December 4, from a trip through Southern Utah, where they had been preaohing polygamy, and urging [ members of the church to take more wives. The Gentiles are astounded and dismayed that no mention of the antici Dated legislation is made m the message, The Rev. E Batley Smith has made his appearance m Chicago as a preacher of a new religion. He says the time has come for apostles to perform miracles again. He claims Divine power, A doctor has been arrested at Lynn,
Maesachtjssets, charged with malpractice by* 500 fcraaies, Chnrles fcrtiles, caller of Chicago Grain Exchange, was shot dead by Theresa Sturia, an Italian girl, whom he had illused. A. railway bridge at Bromley, near Loudon, fell on the morning of November 24th. Seven workmen, who were beneath the structure eating breakfast, were killed, and several others injured. Archbishop Purcell, ot Cincinnati, has recently failed. A large amount of money was left with him m greater or lesH sums by members of his Church, and great scandal has been the result :of his failure. The Church refuses to make his deposits good, as the money was the bishop's own private obligation. John Roah, shipbuilder, Philadelphia, has entered into a contract to build an iron merchant vessel, the first ever built m the United States, at a cost of 65d015. per ton. Much excitement was caused m Cairo on November 24th by the recruits refusing to proceed to London unless they had Arabi Pasha as leader. Three hundred and thirty of 800 men composing the Berkshire regiment are ill at Cairo, owing to the bad sanitary condition of the Barracks. A mob, on the night; of iNovember 27th, attacked Jervois- street Hospital, where Dolan, who shot and killed Detective Harwood, is confiaed, with the object, it is believed, of removing him. The police beat them off. % A party of .Moonlighters attacked a farmhouse near Cashel, County of Tipperary, on the 27th of November, but the occupants beat them oft, and then pursued and captured the whole gang. The steamer Cambronne sank owing to a collision m the British Channel on the 27th ultimo, and several persons were drowned. Tho recent sale of the Hamilton Palace collection has enabled the Duke to resume control of his estate. John Crander, another lunatic, was committed for trial at the London Police Court on 'December 24th for writing threatening letters to the Princess of Walea and Mr Qladstonft. The number of agtarian outrages during November was eighty-nine. j Danvers, the soldier who assisted the '\ Dublin nolice m securing the murderers of Detective Cox, considers as inadequate a reward of a few pounds and a good conduct medal. • The public agree with him. London was wrapped m a dense fog on December 3rd, almost as dark as ' l midnight, and under its cover it was rumoured that the Fenians intended to make an attack on the Queen's procession to open the new Koyal Palace of Justice. The opening ceremonies were imposing.
