PATEAROA.
(By Our Own Correspondent.)
Our young townsman, Mr Ernest Carr, was the successful applicant among a large number for the position ' Df manager of a big nyrdaulic sluicing claim in the Central Puller district, Nelson Province. He was born and brought up here, and, being known as a useful member of the community - in social and sporting directions, a _ M large number of his friends turned out to bid him good-bye at a social in the hall Mr R. M'Skimming was in ths chair. The following sungs and recitations were given Songs: My Heart is Over tLe Sea, Mrs Stewart; Jua- 1 nita, Mr A. M'Skimming; The Dear Old Home, Mr Stewart; The Admiral's Broom, Mr Herlihy; The Mill Wheel. Miss M'lvor; After the Ball, Mies Tregonning; recitations: A Modern Monstrosity, Mi A. Millar; Washington, Mr R. M'Skimming. On behalf of Mr Carr's . friends, the chairman then handed that gentleman a gold Maltese cross as some slight recognition of the good opinion which the community holds of him. The chairman and Messrs s. Crarar, D. C. Stewart and P. M'Atamney each wished Mr Carr success in his responsible position and tributes were paid to his energy and ability as a hydraulic miner and to the share which he performed in the social work of the district, concerts and dances being his line; while the Cricket Club had in him a dependable and useful all-round man. The accomnanistes to the songs were Missei Dagg and Pearce. A dance followed refreshments.
Mr Carr got most of his mining knowledge from Mr Stewart, of the Patearoa Hydraulic Sluicing Co., and his aptitude as a pupil, together with some, experience as manager of various claims, leaves little doubt as to his success in this new and important situation.
Maniototo Cricket Association. The''annual meeting was held on the 18th inst, at Ranfurly. Present — Messrs Pender (chairman), Deehan, Crerar, Wilson Forrester and Coppell. The following office-bearers were sleeted for the year: -President,Mr J. Brown (re-elected) ; vice-presidents, Messrs F. Morgan (Ranfurly), Peebles and Greer; secretary ana treasurer, Mr J. Crerar (re-elected). It was resolved that the Naseby ana Patearoa captains be requested to have their men on the field at the appointed starting time (11 o'clock) in matches between these clubs.
The secretary was instructed to endeavour to arrange a match with some other district or county; the M.C.A. team to be selected by him. A motion of regret at the death of Mr Joseph Hnre was put on the minutes. Mr Crerar, in speaking to the motion, made special reference to Joe's extraordinary keenness as a cricketer, to his dogged defence and indifference to bruises, and to his thoroughly sportsman-like behaviour on the field.
