' . / ' Work,on the main distributing races for the Ida Valley irrigation scheme is being pushed steadily forward, the race being now completed for a distance of about a mile past Aston's at the Upper end of the Valley. It is reported that the leak at the reservoir is still giving the engineering staff a good deal of trouble arid it will pro- 1 ably\ be sometime before the difficulty is overcome. Despite the strong gale that blew on Monday there was a lsrge attendance of children at the picnic at Mr Fenton's Maniototo Station, the arrangementsfor which were in the capable hands of Mrs R. L. Francis and Mrs W. Smith. The children made up a' large Waggon load, and there were about twelve traps of adults; in addition there were a good many- visitors from Ranfurly. During the day the usual, games and races were indulged in, the customary number ofteais partaken of, and at the close lollies W6re distributed to the youngsters as the result of the liberality of the local storekeepers. Bnfora'dispersing Mr Craven proposed a hearty vote of thanks to Mr Fenton for the use of his ground, which was carried with musical honors. Mr Fenton expressed his pleasure at seeing the picnickers'and hoped they would live to have many, mora of the same kind. A very pleasant day was spent, the unfavourable weather- having failed to damp the spirits .of the pleasurerseekers. We draw the attention of racehorse owners to -the alteration in the Vincent Jockey Club's advt. Mr T. Healey, Kyeburo, wishes to lease for three or four months the grazing of 150 acres of English grass. 'Sittings of, the court are fixed for Naseby on Tuesday, 11th prox., and St. Bathans on Wednesday, 12th.
