ALLUVIAL MINING.

TO THE EDITOR. Sik, —As an old correspondent to your paper. I would like to make a few remarks on the above subject. I have read the discussion asking is mining in Mauiototo getting done. I say, No ! It is just in its infancy. I am a prospector of 20 years' standing, and am prepared to refute the statement that it is. We need to conserve our rights though. During the secretaryship of the Miners' £s." sociation of the late Mr A. M'O. Brown, I was a member of the association and mining at the tirue at Hound burn Greek. I pointed out to him the importance of keeping mining outlets open. He quite concurred, and said that Naseby would not always la,at, and our sons would have to go and try their luck on the fields I had been working oil. I believe that through his agency there is an outlet left for Houndburn Creek. I have lived on Penny weight Diggings for six months, to which there is a branch of the Government water-race. The place bag been neglected for the past 25 years. Mr C. B. Hose rented the branch race for about 20 years, hut is old now and no longer uses it. When it was first constructed, miners paid £4 a week for water, which shows that good gold must have been got; and there is good gold there still. If a branch of the Government race were constructed towards Lower Garibaldi for six miles from its present termination (this branch race is already constructed for four miles) it could be brought down with a good fall to command about 200 a of auriferous ground. There is an area of 800 aof mining reserve here. The race would traverse grazing lands all through its course, so there would be no trouble, most of the ground being ploughabie. When Naseby is done there is plenty o£ other ground.—l am, fee., James M'Len-nan.
