THE TRANSVAAL
London, Sept. 3. Lord Roberts has formally annexed the Transvaal. The Boers vainly attempted to destroy the, Johannesburg waterworks. General Hart surprised and defeated them. Detachments of General De Wets commando were defeated in the same neighbourhood with heavy loss. Sept. 4. Five hundred Boers released and armed the prisoners confined in Klip Gaol. General Plummer again defeated the Boers at Rooi Kop, capturing 100, rifles, 40,000 rounds of cartridges and large quantities of supplies. Sept. 4. ' Ex presidents Kruger and Steyn are living in railway carriages at Nilspruit. The carriages are oovered by the red cross. Wellington, Sept. 6. The Premier has received the following cable from the High Commissioner at Capetown : Heasley dangerously wounded at Crocodile River on the 19lh August. Accidentally omitted from cable of 24th August" Private Heasley was in No, 1 company of the Third Contingent, and came from Ashburton. The Premier has received tbe following cable from Major Robin, dated 4th inst. : " Troopers Witheford, Wallis, Morine, and Hutton joined. Have promoted Capt. Madockslo Major ; Lieutenants Bartlett and Crawshaw lo captains; Sergeant Robs (third) to lieutenant to fill the vacancy. Major Cradock takes an Imperial command. I still command the New Zealanders. Her Majesty the Queen presented \ Trooper Coutts (First Contingent) with ft scarf.
