The following table taken from the Political Budget seems to show, if nothing more, that the functions of Government ate more extensive here than in Victoria :

In Victoria, the Chief Secretary's Department controls police, jails, hospitals, Abo rigioes, &c, and a comparison is impossible with our Colonial Secretary's office, except at cost of too much space. In New Zealand the Attorney, General's Department is a branch of the Colonial Secretary's office. In Victoria all the Courts are controlled by the proper Minister—a functionary we have contrived to do Without for two years.
