THE POLICE COMMISSION.
The Police Commission continues its sittings. Mr Taylor, M.H.R., annonnced that he intended bringing charges of perjury, gambling, and drunkeuness against Inspector Emerson, of Napier. The allegations- wou Id be totally distinctive from those which formed the subject of investigation by Mr Eyre Kenny, and for the purpose of proving them he (Mr Taylor) would attend the sittings of the commission in Hawke's Bay. One very curious case was that of Constable Mayne, who had moved out of or into the_ force on nine occasions since 1877 when he joined. He had been twice discharged and once retrenched, and was now in opposition to the inspector's recommendation doing plain clothes duty, a Minister having interfered on his behalf. The examination of Colonel Hume was resumed on Monday, and he was examined regarding the Lawless, Emerson, Moore and Bennett cases. Police appointments were much sought after, 500 applications being on the list.
