NASEBY ATHENÆUM.

The adjourned annual meeting of. subscribers of the Naseby Athenaeum was hold iu the reading room oh Tuesday evening, 20th inst. The presideut occupied the chair, and seven subscribers (a bare quorum) were present. The minutes of the previous annual meetiug were read aud confirmed. committee's report. The report of the outgoing committee was read as follows :—" Your committee, in presenting their report for the year ISBB S9, have to congratulate the members on the prosperous condition of the institution, although we can not hand over a large balance to the incoming committee.— We have- carried out the desire expressed by subscribers at the last annual meeting by adding a large number of books to the library, which involved an expenditure of £2l 14s.—During the year an eutertainment was given in aid of the Athenieum by the Naseby Aboriginals, and although the weather proved extremely unpropitions, a net sum of £9 1.9s 6d was realised, which was added to the funds of the institution.— After paying off all outstanding accounts, your committee, on taking office, had a balance in hand of £9 9s 9d; This year we have at the present date a balance of £7 7s 4d, with outstanding liabilities to the amount of £7 6s 3d.—Your committee would like to draw the attention of subscribers to the matter of the endowment at Swinbnrn held by the institution. The land is situate in such an unfavorable locality that it is utterly useless as a means of revenue, it being found impossible to obtain any returns from it, either by leasing or otherwise. We would therefore suggest to the incoming committee that au endeavor be made to have it exchanged for a block from which the institution might derive some benefit." balance-sheet. The annual balance-sheet, which was also read, shewed the total receipts to have been as follow :—Balance at bank, £2B 10s Sd ; subscriptions, £23 8s ; subsidy from County Council, £10; proceeds of concert, £9 19s Gd; donation from Mutual Improvement Society, £5 4s ; sale of waste paper, £l. Total, £7B 2s 2d. The money had been expended as follows : —Payment of previous year's accounts, £l9 0s lid ; librarian, £2O ; new books, £2l 14s ; coal, £1 4a 6d ; papers and periodicals, £7 14s 3d ; kerosene, aud sundries, £4 Is 7d ; new shelves, etc., £2 10s !0d ; is surance, £1 4s 6d; balance in bank, lis 7d. Total, £7B 2s 2d. The President moved the adoption of the report, which was seconded by Mr. Petrie, and carried unanimously. ELECTION OF OFFICERS. The election of officers for the current year was then proceeded to, with the following results : President : Mr. William Newman. Secretary and Treasurer : Mr. D. J. Stewart. COMMITTEE. The following gentlemen were elected as Committeemen :—Messrs. Smith, Nicol and Gordou. THE "WAR CRY." Mr. M. Spillard wished to know if the newly-appointed committee would be in favor of subscribing to the "War Cry?" The price would amount to only sr.me four or five shillings per annum, and he thought that paper should be placed on the table. Several of those present spoke in decided terms against any sectarian paper whatever being subscribed to by the Athcuxum. VOTES OF THANKS. On the motion of Mr. Petrie, a heartyvote of thanks was accorded the president and secretary for their services during the year. Mr. Petrie referred in highly complimentary terms to the creditable manner in which Messrs. Newman and Nicol had discharged their duties, and the great interest which both gentlemen had shewn in the welfare of the institution. The motion was seconded by Mr. Gordon, and carried unanimously. A vote of thanks to the chair terminated the proceedings. —■ *
