A. panter named George Child was arrested yesterday on a charge of alleged attempted wife murder. It appears he came home drunk. His wife had gone to bed and was asleep, when she was awakened by Child haying hold of her head, with a knife in his hand, with which he tried to cut her throat. She struck the knife, which cut her chin, and then managed to get it from him. Child was afterward locked up.

At the Supreme Court the bill charging James M'ftory with murder at Tuapeka Mouth was thrown out, but a true bill was found on the charge of manslaughter. George Luckhurst was sentenced 10 six months, De:iis Murphy to five, years for burglary, Ah Chew to two years for larcany.and WongKew Fling to six years for burglary. News has been received ofthodsath in Scotland of John M'Gregor, discoverer of the Lake Wakatipu Goldfields. A Gazette extra, files the assembling of Parliamant for May 10th.

Sir George Grey, on being interviewed, stated that he had no desire to become Governor and have to entertain everybody, as if he were the keeper of a colonial tMc d'hote. He is better and has more freedom as he is.
