AN EARTHQUAKE.
"The south of Europe has been the scene of a moet destructive earthquake, spreading death aDd des-jlation in all directions. Two severe shocks of earthquake were experienced, at Nice (Italy) about six in the morning. The shocks were preseded by a sound aa of distant rumbling, which seemed to grow in intensity until the earth trembled with terrible violence, the agitations increasing and culmioa;ing in a shock of calamitous force. Half-naked people rushed from their houses into the streets ; womea attended bv terrified children hurried about, screaming in chorus,'and imploring the ; Diety to protect them. Amidst a scene of the wildcat and most indescribable disorder, a sudden terrible termination was put to the earth's agitation. The ground, which had sppare»tly been receding from under the feet of those who were attempting to fly from the impending doom, was, as if by a magic spell, forced into tranquility, and the next instant the houses rocked «nd were torn aa If by a mighty unseen force, and then fell to the ground, killing some and injuring a great number of terrorstricken people. . Information from Oanne» says skocksSwero experienced there with astounding severity, and much damage has been done. The Prinoe ot Wales is there, and escaped without injury. The. shocks were felt with violence at Monaco, where rocks were split into atoms, while huge pieces were burled a considerable dißtanee with death-dealing force. Some splinters were shot forth wi'h meteoric force, rapidly wrecking the houses or falling into the sea wich a deafening hiss. A great Bensation waa canard at Monte Carlo, where, although not felt with like force as at other places, the shocks had the effect of driving the whole populace almost frantic.
At Genoa the people assembled in the streets and prayed with heartrending fervour, The town of Dianonareaa is reported to be almost toially destrojgd; and Oneglia, » town 55 miles S.W. of Genoa, and the towns of ffoli and Albesolli have suffered to a great extent.
The latest news states that hundreds of people have been killed and wounded.
