The_ Annual Kaces commenced this afternoon (Thursday): The day was warm in the extreme About 10.30 p in. bustle was evident in the town, and from that time till 2 • p.m. there was one continual hubbuh—vehicles of all kinds rattling up and down the streets, and horsemen galloping about, many of them evidently desiring to impress the spectators with the 'idea that, although they weie not going to compete, their horses' powers and their own were not lobe despised. A fair number of people mustered at the course, where the creature comforts were attended to "by Mr. Pinder, of the Empire Hotel. The "talent" were not unrepresented. The first event was the Maiden Plate, of 20 sovs., for all horses that have never won an advertised prize of £2O or r-ver (matches and.hack races excepted.) Weight for age. Distance 14 mile. Goodman's Yatcendon c01t... (Kudmgs). 1 M-Kay's Weka, aged ... (Owner) 2 There were only two entries. Both horses went off well together. Weka gradually forged ahead, and led by several lengths oil the first round. On the last round the colt put on a spurs, collaring Weka, and taking a front position, won easily. District Handicap, of 25 sovs. Distance,. 1-i mile. Keenan's Wild Manx Boy, aged, 9st 41bs 1 Mr Keenan was the only one that accepted for this race. Manx JBoy therefore went round the course, and secured 50 per cent, of the stakes. G.rand Stand Handicap, of 40 sovs. Dis tance, 2 miles Goodman's York, 3yrs, 7st ... ... l Keenauls Freestone, 6yrs, Sst lOlbs ... 2 Swanson's Blue l'eter,"aged, Sst -Jibs ... 3 York led, Blue i-'eter a bad third. This order was maintained in passing the judges box. Freestone made a game effort to change places with York, in which he was unsuccessful. From the first the event.was considered a certainty for York, who was well recommendeu, and who did not belie his backers—coming in several lengths in advance of Freestone, who was heavily weighted. Selling Race of 20 sovs. Horses to be sold for £4O, weight for age; £3O, allowed lOlbs ; £2O, allowed 201b; £lO, allowed 301b. Post entry, £1 Is. Distance 1 mile. Surplus to go to the Club. .Norma and Jack jumped together :it tte start, both running neck and neck for a considerable--distance. The old horse, Baek-liii-.r, gained on the leading horses, Norma faHh;.,- back. Jack proved too good for the company—passing the Stand well a,head, Backbiter second .and Norma a bad third. Messrs Inder and George put up the winner for sale, which was bought jin by the owner at the entered figure.
