THE HEMP MARKET.
JANUARY GRADING RETURNS,
The Department of Agriculture has issued the following returns w ith regard to hemp, tow and stripper-slips graded at New Zealand portg during the month of January:— HEMP. Ports G.F. H.F. L.F. C. Auckland Wellington 03 522 181 150 Picton 52 17' 15Blenheim 38 * 2 Bluff One hundred and nine bales at Auckland, 140 at Wellington, and 173 at the Bluff were rejected and two bales at the Bluff were condemned. The total number of bales in each grade, with the figures for the corresponding month of last year in parenthesis, were: Good Fair 153 (193), High Fair 675 (900), Low Fair 083 (570), Common 090 (683), Rejected 422 (608) Condemned 2 (16), a total of 2,631 bales (3,036), a decrease of 405 bales. The number of bales graded at each port were: Auckland 699, Wellington 1,056, Picton 84, Blenheim 40, Bluff' 752. TOW. Ports Ist 2nd 3rd. Auckland Wellington «. Picton Bluff —34 195 Eight bales at Auckland and 14 at the Bluff were condemned. The number of bales in each grade, with the figures for the same month last year in parentheses, was as follows: Ist grade nil (5), 2nd grade 98 (98), 3rd grade 197 (133), condemned 22 (31), a total of 317 (267), an increase of 50 bales.
Fifteen bales of stripper slips were graded 2nd grade at the Bluff. No stripper slips were graded during January, 1937.
The latest advice from the High Commissioner’s Office, London, states that there is no demand for New Zealand hemp, shippers’ prices being out of range. Second hand sellers “Common” £l9 10/-. The Manila market is dull and the Sisal market, firmer.
