MANAWATU COUNTY COUNCIL
MONTHLY MEETING. - The monthly meeting of the Manawatu County Council was held in Sandon yesterday and was presided over by Mr W. E. Barber, Chairman.
The County finances were reported on as follows: County Fund Ac., dr., £11,206 16/3, Loan Ac., ,er., £3219 1/6. Receipts since the last meeting- amounted to £1794 1/-. The amount of rates levied was given as £22,523,19/1 (excluding Native rates) and £11,046 9/3 was shown as paid, leaving £11,477 9/10 outstanding to date., The tramway manager reported that the items of traffic for January were metal 282 c.yds., minerals 23. toils, merchandise 41 tons, manure 12 tons, bitumen 2 tons, wool 91 bales, general items- 1 ton. The , earnings for the month were £lO6 1/7 and the running expenses £7l 13/3, showing a credit balance of j £34 8/4. 1 The following alterations to the rate roll were approved: .Est. M. A. Honore, Himatangi, pt. 10; same to A. C. Wilson, Himatangi, pt. IH. > The engineer reported that work had commenced on the Manawatu River bridge at Shannon. Scrapingand spot painting of steelworkwas procedeing from the Shannon side. The steelwork had been found to be scaly and rusty in parts, but no trace of iheavv pitting had been found. Metal patching had been carried out on the Shannon highway. The grass shoulders on the Himatangi-Rangiotu highway had been cut and drainage matters at-, tended to. The shoulders had be-; come too high and were trapping, surface water. White traffic lines were being repainted on bitumen highways. As a general policy flying squads had been claying and metalling county roads, intersections and curve's in particular dur. ing the month. The addition of clay filler to the shingle roads had resulted in a marked improvement where the work had been undertaken.
