FOXTON GIRL GUIDES AND BROWNIES.
ANNUAL MEETING. The annual meeting of the Fox-
ton Girl Guide and Brownie committee was held yesterday afternoon in the Presbyterian schoolroom, presided over by Mrs S. R. Austin.
An apology for absence was received from Mrs F. A. Mason, and the resignation of Miss J. Ross from the committee was received with regret. The annual report for the year ending June 30th, 1936, was read and received as follows: “During the past year four committee meetings were held, presided over by Mrs Austin, the average attendance at such being eight. A well-attend-ed parade of Girl Guides, Brownies and Boy Scouts was held at the Presbyterian Church on October 27th. Two shop days were held during the year which proved to be most successful financially. A profit of £6 6/7 was realised from the shop day held in June and from this amount it was decided to allow £4 6/7 for the Brownie fund and £2 for the Guide fund. Mrs Elliot visited Foxton twice, taking the Brownies for their first and second class badges respectively. A donation of £3 from the Levin Company when it disbanded, was gratefully received, £2 being placed in the Guide funds and 15/- in the Brownie, fund. Reports of the progress of the companies were read at the meeting held in February by the Guide Captain and the Bi l own Owl and these reports were much appreciated by the committee. An endeavour was mfide to take the Guides to the sports held at Palmerston N. but this had to be cancelled.”
The annual report of the Guide company was real by the captain (Miss G. Allan) as follows:. “The Company was inaugurated a little over a year ago, fmd on, the 10th of August, the first birthday will be celebrated, that date being the anniversary of the enrolment. Two Church parades were held during the year and a parade was also held on Anzac Day for the service in the Town Hall. A “flying-up” ceremony with the Brownie Pack was held in November last. In April fourteen guides and recruits were taken to Palmerston North to participate in the shield competition of the Manawatu distiict. The girls did remarkably well considering that second-class work had been studied for only a few months. On Saturday, 13th June, Mrs Elliott attended a meeting conducted .by the Captain, this being part of the test for the Captain’s warrant.
'Second class work is being proceeded with, some of the Guide? being almost ready for their certificates and recruits are being instructed for their Tenderfoot Badges. Hikes have been held on suitable occasions and very much enjoyed. The captain wished to express her gratitude for the valuable assistance of the acting Lieutenant, Miss Lapworth, and also to thank the committee*for the splendid way in which they have made it possible for uniforms and equipment to be secured with a minimum of trouble. The balance-sheet was also read and adopted. The election of officers for the ensuing year resulted as follows. President: Mrs D. R. Barron; vicepresident: Mrs S. R. Austin; secretary: Miss J. Cowley. Opportunity was taken by Mrs S. Austin to make a presentation on behalf of the committee members, to Miss M. Barron, who is leaving the district. Mrs Austin spoke in eulogistic terms of Miss Barron’s work in connection with the formation of a Brownie pack locally and wished her every success for the future. f Miss Barron suitably replied. The president welcomed Miss E. Barber, who is to succeed Miss Barron as Brown Owl, and thanked lifer for coming forward to carry on the Brownie work. A welcome was also extended to Miss 11. Hinds who is going to join as a Tawny Owl. A vote of thanks to the officers for their work during the past year terminated the meeting.
