TO THOSE CONCERNED

(To The Editor)

Sir, —If the main highway is formed through Mr Cull’s land it should bo built up high so that it will be above flood level because the river is now scouring out the land on Mr Death’s property, and possibly will scour out the flood bank, and leave the proposed new highway at the mercy of the flood waters. This water catching the spring tides, and a good westerly wind, one can imagine the condition in which the road will bo left. Also, the ci’ossing of Union St. would be a, vei'y dangerous one if the traffic continues along the present road, but if the straight road into Union St. was made, all danger would be avoided, as the cross traffic from Patrick St. to Johnston iSt. would be nil. Johnston St. is a narrow street and not suitable as a highway, not only on account of its narrowness but on account of the bad approach, on to Avenue Road. On the straight l’oad all the crossings would be safe and clearly visible. I would be sorry to see the new highway used for a flood bank which seems to be its fate in the near future if constructed. Yours, etc. G. A. H. Sir, —Is it not time that steps should be taken by the police to stop the illegal competitions for raising money by the selling of guesses which takes place in Main Street almost every week. If the law is flouted on behalf of some deserving charitable case, there might be some excuse, but when it is done to find money for some other purpose, the sticking up niusance should be stopped. Numbers of these money-raising stunts have been held but I question, whether any of your readers know what becomes of the money and it’s about time that the Magistrate took a hand in the game. —Yours, etc. ROOKED.
