NEWS AND NOTES.
The secretary of the Dunedin branch of the Returned Soldiers’ Association has made the suggestion that the 20th anniversary of the lauding of New Zealand troops at Gallipoli should be maflked on April 25th of next year by the issue of a special commemorative stamp. The rising generation, he said, did not -realise the significance of the part that New Zealanders had taken in the Great War. To-day many of the men were breaking down as the result of the strain to which they had been subjected, and the issue of such a stamp might perhaps draw public attention to what was due to them. The suggestion was favourably received by the members and it was decided to forward it on to headquarters.
One of the most remarkable features of the 1934 Ideal Homes Exhibition in London is the “CrasyHouse,” designed by the famour artist, Mr Heath-Robinson. It is populated with 30 quaint figures who perform all sorts of amusing duties. In the garden Sandy Willie directs the nozzle of the weed killer on to the thistles while Jake the garden boy, pulls the string that works the bellows that pump the poison that makes the thistles whistle. And Mi- Welwyn Sprozzle, the sun-bather on the wash-house roof, pulls the string that makes his sunshade twirl, the chauffeur bends and pulls at the starting handle of his Super-quaint 1934 Some-thing-or-other saloon car, and Harold, sitting in a chair tied on the lawn-mower, pedals on his roundabout trail, with an old wooden bucket for a grass box, and an old bass broom to sweep behind. It is a cheerful fact that peple have the humour to create such fantastic things in times like these. Another cheerful fact is that you can go to any tobacconist and get Red ’Shield (dark) and Blue Shield (medium) for only 1/7 a 2-oz. tin. These tobaccos are New Zealand’s best —“toasted to a turn” to make them perfectly smooth, cool, and satisfying. Also in economical 11b. canisters. 48
