FOXTON PLUNKET SOCIETY.

The usual bi-monthly meeting of the Plunket Society was held in the Society’s rooms yesterday afternoon. There were present Mesdames W. Trueman (in chair), D. Christie, E. Thane, A. Nichols (Oroua Downs), P. C. Raikes (Oroua Downs) and D. R. Barron (lion, sec:). The Nurse’s report for September and October was read and adopted. Accounts amounting to £49 7/7 were passed for payment, including Nurse’s yearly salary of £35.

It was also decided to hold a sliojj day in February. Mi’s F. C. Raikes, delegate from the Foxton committee to Palmerston North, then, gave an interestingaccount of her visit on the 9th inst. to the Palmerston North Plunket Society to meet Dr. Martin Tweed, successor to Sir Truby King, who will spend most of his time travelling in the interests of the society.

Dr. Tweed in his address stressed the advisibility of commencing an Endowment Fund throughout the Dominion to produce a fixed income and thus become independent in the future. He also considered it advisable that all members of the committee should be thoroughly conversant with the work of the society and qualify for membership. He remarked that in passing through Palmerston N. one thing that had struck him was the display of dummies in the various shop windows. "He considered that the Plunket Society should do something to eject these dreadful articles from the Dominion.

There were several young mothers present at the and one of these asked should sweets be allowed to children of pre-school age. Dr. Tweed answered that good barley sugar and chocolates in moderation were .in order but only as part of the meal.

Mrs Raikes was accorded a vote of thanks by Mrs Trueman (President) for her comprehensive report.

Visits to the Plunket Rooms for September totalled 129, whilst those for October were 197.

The meeting closed with a vote of thanks to the chair.
