SEQUEL TO PUBLICATION OF McARTHUR PAMPHLET.

INVESTMENT TRUST MANAGER FINED. Auckland, November 9. As a sequel to the publication of a pamphlet entitled “McArthur Strifes Back at Coates and the Kelly Gang,” Maurice Vincent Bates, the Auckland manager of the Investment Executive Trust of New Zealand, Ltd., was charged in the Magistrate’s Court to-day with dispersing and also with publishing a pamphlet in which the place of abode of the printer was not stated. He pleaded guilty. The police said, that over 1500 pamphlets had been printed. Bates said that they had been printed on instructions from Australia. The printer had been prosecuted on similar charges at Wellington. Counsel for the defence said that the offences were only technical. The defendant had relied on the printer, who said that he thought the printing o£ the firm’s name was sufficient. The magistrate suggested that a conviction on one charge would suffice, but the prosecuting detective said that he had been instructed to press both charges. The magistrate said that he appreciated the defendant’s bona fides and fined him the minimum amount of £5 on both charges. He also suggested that application should be made to the Minister for remission of one of the fines.
