SAFETY AT ARAPUNI.

«.— MINISTER'S CONFIDENCE

Confidence in the stability of the foundations of the power-house at Aranuni was 1 expressed by the Minister of Public Works, Hon. J. Bitehener, when replying in the House of Representatives last night to the debate on the Public Works Statement. “On the advice of the engineer-in-chief and the officers of the department the power-house is now being enlarged,” said the Minister. “The stability of the foundations warrants that work going on. There was a lot of criticism in past years regarding the stability of the foundations and the running of the machinery. Rome said the faults in the machinery were due to the foundations. It was nothing of the kind. It was the machinery itself which was at fault and after a lot of cave and trouble the engineers of the department have definitely proved that. The faults have been satisfactorily adjusted and for the past twelve months the machinery has been running quite satisfactorily.”

The Minister" of Finance. Rt. Hon. J. G. Coates: Some people are slightly nervous. Air. Bitehener: That is so, but everything has been done to guard against anything happening there, and, as far as the is concerned, it is perfectly safe.
