ENTRANCE TO SCHOOL
CHILDREN UNDER SIX
Wanganui board’s view,
The action of the Nelson Education Board in objecting to a paragraph in the Education Gazette stating that no child under six years who was not entitled to be on the roll might attend a publicschool, was not supported at a meeting of the Wanganui Education Board on Wednesday. The Nelson Board forwarded a copy of a legal opinion, stating that children under six might he allowed to attend school provided their names did not appear on the roll. Acting on this advice, the Nelson Board decided to advise its teachers to admit children who will reach the) age of six years during the current term.
A letter was received from the Minister of Education, stating that the intention of the recent legislation was to restrict the age of admission to six, although the existing legislation did not preclude children not on the roll from attendance at the beginning of a term during which they attained the age of six. The Minister asked for the support of the Board in giving effect to the intention of flit legislation. If it was, wished that children should be allowed to enter at the beginning of the term this should be done by Act of Parliament.
The Board decided to support the Minister’s request.
