FOXTON UNEMPLOYMENT COMMITTEE.
FORTNIGHTLY MEETING. The fortnightly meeting of the Fi\xton Unemployment Committee was held in the (Council Chambers last evening, presided over by the Mayor (Mr. M. E. Perreau). Also present were Messrs F. Shaw, T. Sim, J. Johnson, W.' Ross, R. Owen, 0. Dawson, W. R. McKenzie (Certifying Officer) and the secretary (Mr. Win. Trueman). Apologies for absence were received from Messrs J. K. Ilornblow and D. R. Barron.
The Board wrote, notifying the committee that the 4A scheme had been cancelled as it appeared as if the men were being engaged in seasonal occupations. The following table showing amended maxima in connection with weekly emoluments a married worker might receive under the scheme was appended : Married, without children, £3 per week; do, with one child, £3 2/6; do, with two children, £3 5/-;. do., with four or more. children, £3 10/-. The Board advised that the Railway Department was prepared to carry all goods for charitable distribution at half tarrif rates. A circular was received relative to the employment of Native unemployed in which it was stated that before a married Maori could obtain work at married men’s rates of pay, he had to produce a marriage certificate or proof that he had been married according to Native custom and was still supporting a wife. Mr. Shaw: That is opening the door. We will soon have more Maori relief workers than pakeha. A further circular instructed the committee that Id for every 1/S credited to relief workers on farm schemes by way of board and lodgings, had to |be deducted as wages tax.
