FOXTON-PALMERSTON NORTH TRAIN SERVICE.
SANSON TEAM CURTAILED. Official intimation of the Railway Department’s decision to discontinue the. whole of the existing train services on the Foxton branch was received at Tuesday’s meeting of the Manawatu County Council when a letter on the subject was received from the department. “This is rather an importantquestion as far as we are concerned,” said the chairman (Cr. W. E. Barber). “It is a very serious matter and I move that the letter be referred to our railway manager. They have stopped us getting metal over their line and that position will have to be gone into.” “I don’t anticipate any. trouble and think satisfactory arrangements, can jbe made to rise the department's line,” said the county clerk (Air. A. K. Drew) who is also the county’s tramway manager. The council agreed to leave the matter in the hands of Air. Drew to take up with the Railway Board. PROTEST FROM LABOUR PARTY. At a meeting of the Palmerston North Labour party held on Tuesday evening, a resolution waspassed condemning the action of the Government in closing the passenger service from Palmerston North to Foxton thus playing into the hands of competing private transport firms and giving the latter a monopoly. Tt, was stated that as the railways were the property of the people they should ho used for the benefit of the people, who will still be taxed to pay the interest on the capital invested.
