MAGISTRATE’S COURT

MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the local Magistrate’s Court was held this morning before Mr. .T. L. Stout, S.M. FAILURE TO PAY LEVY. Percy John Kelly was charged with failing to pay his unemployment levy. The prosecution was conducted by AL\ Lowden, of the Labour Department, Palmerston North, and Kelly pleaded guilty.

Mr. Lowden stated that Kelly was a single man who had registered as unemployed. He had failed to pay his levy and was written to by the authorities when he had promised to pay and so no action was then taken. He had not fulfilled his promise, however, and instructions that legal proceedings should /he taken, had been issued. Kelly was a fisherman, residing at Manawatu Heads, and had made no attempt to seek unemployment relief work. Had lie done so arrangements could have been made with the local committee to deduct his levy from the first payment made to him. Asked by the S.M. if he had anything to say, Kelly replied in the negative. The S.M.: Are you prepared to do as Mr, Lowden suggests: Get work and pay the levy?-—Yes. Well, why haven’t you done so before?

Kelly said that since July ho had nothing to pay his levy with.

Mr. Lowden intimated that he had paid only £1 of the total levies.

The S.M. said he was satisfied that Kelly had not been doing his best to pay the levy and lie was accordingly fined 10/- with costs 10/- and advised to apply to the local committee for wcH immediately in order that the lov\ should be paid. CIVIL CASE.

In an undefended civil case judgment yas given for E. T. Wilson, in a claim for £2 10/-, against E. Perrett, costs amounting to £1 7/0 being allowed.
