WORK OF THE MONTH. Cv. W. E. Barber presided' at Tuesday’s meeting- of the Manawatu County Council at Sanson. CORRESPONDENCE From the Unemployment Board, gard to. the employment of No. 5 scheme workers on private property setting out full particulars in ream! requesting to' be furnished with the council’s position in regard to the “over the fence” scheme. —In moving that the request be complied with, the chairman remained that the demands of the Unemployment Board were placing a great deal of extra work on local bodies. From the Kairanga 'County Council, forwarding a cheque for £232 8s 10d, being the council’s quota of the heavy traffic fees collected to Jnue 30. —Received. From the same council asking the council ito increase its sporting dog tax fees in support of a recommendation of the Dog Registration Act. —It was decided to obtain further information on the question.

From the Foxtoh Borough Council, complaining that the flood indicator posts on the Whirokino Road are too far apart and in times of flood it was difficult for the posts to be seen jbv car lights. The council suggested the putting in of additional posts.—Referred to the clerk and the engineer to attend to. , RATE COLLECTOR’S REPORT. Mr. A. Anderson, the rate collector, reported:—“Arrears of ra-, tes have been coming in very slowly. I propose sending out notices, with a demand for current rates to all ratepayers in arrear. The demands for current rates will be ready to post in about a week’s time. The 12£ per cent, rebate has created a good deal of extra labour in connection with same.” —Adopted. TREASURER’S REPORT. The county treasurer, Mr. A. K. Drew, reported on the county finances as follows: —County fund account (debit), £12,072 9s; loan account (credit), £1377 18s 3d; Main Highways loan account (ei-.) £lOl 4s 4d; nett debit balance, £10,593 Os sd. The amounts shown as available for expenditure on the various ridings were as follows: — Sandon, £344 6s lid; Mt. Stewart, £258 2s 2d; Waitohi, £277 9s lid; Rongotea, £358 5s lid; Carnarvon,, £IBO 4s 9d; Ivawa Kawa, £421 11s 8d; Awahou, £207 19s Id. —Adopted. RATE ROLL. The following alterations to the county rate roll were authorised: — A. 'D. Seaton to M. L. Noble, lot 1, pt. sees. 318 and 384, Carnarvon; H. G. Forlong to 11. A. Forlong, sec. 30, Tangimoana. TRAMWAY REPORT. Mr. A. K. Drew, tramway manager, made the following report on tlie Sanson tramway: —“The chief items of traffic for the month were: Grain, 5£ tons; minerals and manure, lilt tons; general mer--chandise, 15f tons; cheese, 32 crates; eggs, 75 crates; cream, 9 cans; sheep, 1 truck; metal, 401 yards'; posts, 3 trucks; timber, 0005 sup. ft.; cement, 51 tons. The accounts show a debit balance of £y Is 9d for the month’s working.” Enlarging upon the report, Mr. Drew said there was very little business offering for the tram at present and an effort will be made to cut down expenditure as much as possible on the tram. —The report was adopted. ENGINEER’S REPORT.'

Mr. H. V. Bond, county engineer, reported as follows on the county •highways:—

“Highways. —A considerable amount of new draining is being undertaken on the Shannon Road between Moutoa corner and Spring’s road. Surface metal is also (being spread on this road and, corners are being banked where necessary. Drains and culverts have geeii cleaned on the Fox ton Beach Road. Pot-holes on the Whirokino Road have been filled. The timber has arrived for the reconditioning of the Whirokino bridge decking and a start on this work will be undertaken immediately. The necessary metal for the surfacing of the Himatangi-Rangi-otu road has been deilvered and will be spread as soon as a lorry is available. Lupins have been cut back at corners to secure better vision. Drains and culverts have been cleaned and attended to on the Himatangi-Sanson-Bulls, San-son-Awahuri, Awahuri-Fcilding and the Rongotea-Longburn roads. A little surface metal has been spread on the latter road. General: The Maini Drain Road is now being surface metalled throughout. The metal is being carted from the Manawatu River by the county lorries. Previously this work was invariajbly done by contract. Gates have been erected on the. Mt. Stewart reserve.” —Adopted.
