PROPOSED RIVER CUT.

INDEMNIFYING RESOLUTION PASSED BY BOARD. The Manawatu-Oroua River Board’s amended Whirokino cut proposals were advanced a further stage by the hoard at its meeting on Thursday, whom, following discussion, the following resolution was carried: —“That if the Public Works Department or the Unemployment Board, under the No. :> scheme, undertakes the construction of the Whirokino cut, river service access and a navigation canal through Rush Flat, this board will assume all liability in respect of all claims for compensation for land taken or injuriously affected in respect of the proposed cuts, so far as the same are executed in substantial accordance witli the plans and specifications furnished by the hoard and approved by the Public Works Department,” In introducing the matter the chairman (Mr. W. S. Carter) reported that, with Messrs B. G. Gower and R. J. Law, lie had waited on the Foxton Harbour Board with a view to acquainting its members with details of the scheme and seeking their support, Tlie liarhour Board had agreed to the proposal on the understanding that the Marine and Public Works Departments, jointly or individually, supervised the work and the board undertook that there would Oe no detriment to the fairways and shipping facilities or to the Foxton Borough Council’s sewerage system. The deputation had been asked a lot of questions and the Harbour Board had seemed satisfied with the replies. “The Harbour Board attitude,” Mr. Carter proceeded, “puts us in a position to hand to tlie Public Works Department the resolution it required before it could take any steps. The department stipulated that, in ease of any compensation claims arising, it should not he held responsible. The work is so big and advantageous that I • think the hoard would he ill-advised to miss the opportunity. I think any compensation that may lie claimed will jie offset hv the advantages of the work.” Tu reply to a question by Mr. H. T. J. Hunie, the chairman said he did not think the cost to the board would be anything like £3OOO. Following further comment, the resolution already mentioned, moved by Mr. Law and seconded by Mr. C. H. Speirs, was carried. It was) decided that the chairman and Messrs Gower and Law wait on the Minister of Public Works and any others whom it may be necessary to approach in the matter. The committee is to have power to act where necessary.
