UNEMPLOYMENT.
INCREASED PRODUCTION AND EFFORT REQUIRED. Wanganui, August 20. “There is nothing more depressing to a public man than to have resting on his shoulders the constant pressure of men who want work,” said the Prime Minister (Rt. Hon. ,J. G. Coates) in an address before a largely-attended Reform rally to-night. “One would often feel inclined to say: Bother the future; let’s give these men what they want,” the Prime Minister added, “but the spurt of self-reliance and the interest of the community have always to be considered. The line of least resistance may often be the worst course a- public man can follow.” Mr. Coates contended that increased production and increased effort on the part of everybody must be the solution. “New Zealand,” said the Prime- Minister, “can no more isolate itself from the markets of the world and the economic principnlcs governing other parts of the world than you or I can fly over the moon. I would be the last one to willingly interfere with the standard of the working people of this country. I am as anxious as anyone else to see that 1 hey have equal opportunity and living conditions of which wc all ought to be proud. To do that it still requires initiative on the part of the individual and increased effort.”
