MAIM HIGHWAYS.

The following works were carried out iu this district by the Main Highways Board during the month of Julv: —

Lcvin-Palmerstou North, via Shannon. —Kara Stream bridge: The construction of this bridge and the formation of approaches have been completed. Keeble’s bridge: The formation of the approaches to this bridge is in hand. Manawatu River bridge approaches: The formation of the approaches to this bridge have been completed. Metalling of the deviation and the approach at the Shannon end is in hand. Mangaore Stream bridge: Good progress has been made with the erection of this bridge. Two small bridges over the Makerira Drainage Board main drains have been completed. RECONSTRUCTION PROGRAMME. An important programme of works involving the reconstruction and improvement of roads adjacent to the larger centres of population in the Dominion was approved at the monthly meeting of the Main Highways Board last week. It will be recalled that from the revenue available from the petrol tax the board is making subsidies up to £3 for £l, available for the reconstruction of heavy trafficked highways adjacent to centres of population of over (1000 inhabitants. The board recently had drawn up tentative schemes covering reconstruction adjacent to a large .lumber of centres, and these were submitted to the district highway councils and the automobile associations concerned. The concurrence of the district highway councils and the automobile associations has been received in a number of cases, and a programme approved at the hoard’s meeting which has just concluded. The class of work varies from bituminous surface treated macadam and gravel to concrete, according to the traffic density. In most eases the period for I he programme is five years. The following work in the No. 9 district is included: —Palmerston North-Woodville, 4 miles. Ilimatangi- Palmerston, 15 miles. Sanson- Palmerston North, 114 miles.
