LIBERAL-LABOUR CAMPAIGN

MR VEITCH AT NAPIER. A HOSTILE LABOUR MOTION. Napier, May 14. :vv Mr W. A. Veitch, M.P., for Wanganui, addressed about eight hundred people he!re to-night in continuation of the Liberal-Labour campaign throughout New Zealand. His remarks eonsistd of a criticism of the Massey Government in numerous matters and an advocacy of the party’s, policy. During his address, Mr Veitch received a good hearing, but at .question time was peppered with hostile questions from a strong Labour section and repeatedly had to appeal for a fair hearing when giving his answers. The following motion was declared carried amidst Labour enthusiasm: “That this meeting of Napier citizens is disgusted with the palpable hypocrisy of the Official Opposition styling itself the Liber-a-Labour Party that voted 131 times in support of the Alassef Government, they were elected to oppose out of 219 divisions, and condemn the policy and attitude of Mr " Wilford and his followers, and express our continued confidence in the New Zealand Labour Party with Mr Holland as its head.” Subsequently a vote of thanks to Mr Veitch, moved by Mr G. McKay, ALP. for Hawke’s Bay, was carried. Replying, Air Veitch expressed the opinion that if the Labour motion were put again the majority of those present would vote against it.
