The Speaker took the chair at 2.30 p.m. The Eketahuna Cemetery Reserve Bill was read a first time. The Destitute Persons Bill was received from the Legislative Council and read a first time. The amendments made by the Legislative Council in the Industrial Conciliation and Arbitration Bill were agreed to, except that in clause 7, by which industrial unions shall not be allowed to own more than an acre of land, and that in clause 86, paying the members of conciliation boards ; and a conference was appointed with the Council regarding these two amendments. The Companies' Accounts Audit Bill was passed through committee. When the Harbours Act Amendment Bill was in committee, and After certain additions and amendments the Bill passed through committee. The Shops and Shop Assistants BiU was committed. : The proposal to bring hotel bars within the provisions of the Bill was made by Mr Hutchison and supported by Sir Robert Stout, Messrs Pirani, and Thompson and Dr. Newman. The voting was even— 27 for and against. The Chairman gave his casting vote in favour of the amendment, explaining thai he did so to give the House further opportunity of considering the question. The Minister for Labour proposed an alteration of clause 3, so that it would read : — " All shops in a city, borough, or town district, except those wherein is carried on exclusively the business of a fish-, i monger, or fruiterer, or confectioner, or i coffee-house keeper, or eating house keeper, | shall be closed in each week on the after- | noon of one working-day, at the hour of one of the clock." He explained that this would meet cases in which a variety of goods were sold in one shop, and would prevent a fruiterer who also had groceries in his shop from selling groceries on the holiday. After a slight disouasion the alteration was carried A great fight was made to fix Saturday for the half-holiday which was lost on a division. The following addition to clause 8 was agreed to — That whenever any day in any week shall be observed as a holiday or a half-holiday, then it shall not be incumbent on the proprietor of any shop to observe in that week the half-holiday provided by the Act Clause 4 and 5 were passed and progress was then reported.
