China and Japan.
The Russian forces in Eastern Siberia are said to be— lnfantry, 25,000 ; cavalry, 2500 ; and guns, 64. Five Englishmen who were on board the Kow Shing are still missing. The Dowager Empress of China has assigned for war purposes the money collected to celebrate her birthday. The whole of the Chinese Ministers are urging the Emperor not to give way. It is now believed that the Japanese attack on the naval station and arsenal at Weihaiwai was a ruse to ascertain the number and strength of the guns. Chinese fanatics burned the Catholic and Presbyterian Churches at Shuklung. An American lady missionary was stoned and beaten at Canton. She was rescued by a British gunboat. The fire of the Weihaiwai forts, though they are mounted with Armstrong guns, was badly directed, and no serious damage was inflicted on the Japanese. The Emperor has deprived Li Hung Chang of the insignia of the Peacock's Feather and i educed him three degrees in rank, but he remains in full charge of both the naval and the military forces. The Chinese fleet has left the coast, for the purpose, it is reported, of attacking the Japanese transports landing troop? in Corea. London merchants are alarmed at the report that China has annulled shippers' rights on the south coast, and are conferring as to what steps should be taken in the matter.
