The Anarchist Vaillant, who threw the bomb in the Chamber of Deputies last month, has been sentenced to death. The jury debated for only half an hour before returning their verdict. The trial lasted six hours.

Vaillant refuses to appeal against the sentence. He preserved his cynical demeanour all through, and heard the sentence unmoved.

When called upon to apeak, he reiterated his regret a<; the small number of Deputies who were hurt by the explosion. He read a long document abusing the moneyed classes, and dwelt on the miseries of masses, quoting Darwin and Herbert Spencer. He said he only desired to kill the Deputies, and selected the place whence he thought most of them would be hurt. The bomb was not charged with bullets.

The Palais de Justice briatled with aimed guards during the hearing of the case.
